NEMT is professional transportation for individuals who need assistance getting to and from medical appointments, dialysis... but do not require emergency medical care. This includes services for ambulatory, wheelchair, and stretcher passengers.
Our services are available to:
- Seniors and elderly
- People with disabilities or mobility challenges
- Patients with recurring treatments (dialysis, chemotherapy, physical therapy)
- Individuals without access to reliable transportation
- Facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living, and hospitals
Ambulatory: For passengers who can walk with or without minimal assistance
Wheelchair transport: For passengers using standard or electric wheelchairs
Stretcher transport: For passengers who cannot sit upright during transport
Bariatric transport: For passengers requiring specialized equipment due to weight or size (>250lbs)
Yes. We provide door-to-door service, assisting passengers from their home or facility door into the vehicle and ensuring safe arrival at their destination. Curb-to-curb service is also available upon request.
Yes. Shepherd Ride is contracted with major brokers such as ModivCare and MTM. We also accept private pay and work directly with healthcare facilities.

We recommend booking at least 24–48 hours in advance, though we also accept urgent trip requests based on availability.
For scheduled appointments, you can pre-arrange a Leg B (return trip) at the time of booking. For “Will Call” returns, you or your facility must notify us when the patient is ready. Please note: all return trips require prior approval from our management team before processing.
If a passenger is not present at the scheduled pickup, it may be marked as a no-show. This may still incur a charge. We recommend being ready at least 15 minutes before your scheduled pickup time.
Yes. All Shepherd Ride drivers are:
Background checked and drug screened
Trained in CPR/First Aid and passenger assistance techniques
Certified in HIPAA compliance
Experienced in wheelchair and stretcher securement
Yes. Escorts are welcome to ride with the passenger at no extra charge, provided space is available.

Tidewater area, we serve Hampton Roads, Virginia, including Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and surrounding communities.
Northern Virginia, we serve Loudoun, Fairfax, Mannassas, Prince Williams, Alexandria, Arlington, Fauquier, Frederick counties
Costs vary based on distance, level of service (ambulatory, wheelchair, stretcher), and payer source (Medicaid, private pay, facility contract). Call our office for a custom quote.
